Giza pyramids under a clear winter sky, a classic stop on a New Year in Egypt trip

Where do you want to be when the clock hits midnight: under temple lights, on a Nile deck or beside the Red Sea? New Year in Egypt offers all three, in dry and sunny winter weather. This guide helps you pick one and plan it.

Which Egyptian City Gives You the Best New Year?

It depends on your midnight mood. Cairo is the big-city countdown. Luxor is floodlit temples. Aswan is calm water and Nubian colour. The Red Sea is sun, marinas and resort galas.

How Much Does a New Year Trip to Egypt Cost?

Day tours start near $65. A week of sightseeing starts near $1,200. Flights and hotels come on top.

TripFrom, per person
Karnak and Luxor Temple tour$65
Luxor hot air balloon$75
3-night Nile cruise, Aswan to Luxor$650
4-night Nile cruise, Luxor to Aswan$1,025
7-day Egypt itinerary$1,200

New Year dates can carry holiday supplements. Hotels often add a gala dinner on December 31, so ask if it is compulsory. We always quote your exact dates.

How Many Days Do You Need for New Year in Egypt?

Four days is enough for one city. A week covers the classic route. Ten days adds a slow Nile sail.

  • 4 days: Luxor alone, or Cairo plus one day trip.
  • 4 to 5 nights: a Nile boat from Luxor to Aswan.
  • 7 days: Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel.
  • 10 days: Cairo, then a dahabiya under sail.

Field tip: land at least one day before December 31. Flights slip, and you want to be rested for midnight.

Should You Sail the Nile or Stay in a Hotel for New Year?

Sail if you want one unpack and a new temple every morning. Stay in a hotel if you want a late dinner, a big gala or a pool. Both work in Egypt’s winter weather.

  • On a Nile boat: meals, guides and entrance plans are bundled, and the countdown happens on deck.
  • In a hotel: you pick your own restaurant, your own pace and your own bedtime.
  • On a dahabiya: a small sailing boat for quiet evenings and fewer neighbours.

The Quiet Morning After: Why Is January 1 Perfect for the Big Sites?

Because most parties end late. Early slots at the major sites tend to be calm on the first morning of the year. Put the Valley of the Kings or Giza first, then rest in the afternoon.

Book the private Valley of the Kings tour for that morning. In 2027, January 1 falls on a Friday, part of the Egyptian weekend.

New Year in Egypt: Quick Answers

Which Egyptian city has the warmest New Year’s Eve?

Aswan and Luxor, with sunny days near 24 to 25°C. Nights drop fast, so bring a jacket. The Red Sea stays milder after dark.

Is New Year’s Day a public holiday in Egypt?

The 2027 holiday list shows Coptic Christmas on January 7 but not January 1. In 2027, January 1 is a Friday. We confirm opening times when you book.

Can you toast at midnight in Egypt?

Yes, in licensed hotels, resorts and many Nile boats. Plain cafés often serve no alcohol. Ask your hotel or boat what the gala includes.

Can you spend New Year in two cities on one trip?

Yes. Luxor and Aswan pair well by Nile boat. Cairo and Luxor need a flight or the sleeper train. Pick one city for December 31 and travel the day after.
